KR is preparing the first geoparks: the cabinet has submitted the project for public discussion
The draft describes the legal framework for the creation, functioning, and possible closure of geological parks, which will include areas with unique historical, cultural, archaeological, and natural value.
The Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision emphasizes that the adoption of this procedure will help preserve geological heritage, restore biodiversity, reduce negative impacts on ecosystems, and engage local communities in the development of these areas.
The document highlights that geoparks differ from other categories of specially protected natural areas, as they combine natural objects, landscapes, settlements, and elements of cultural heritage into a single system. It also identifies the "adjacent development area of the Geopark" — a zone around the geopark itself that retains its legal status but is part of the overall concept of sustainable development.
The authors of the resolution are confident that Kyrgyzstan has great potential for creating geoparks of international level, including the possibility of joining the global network of UNESCO geoparks. Currently, there are no officially recognized sites of such status in the country, making the adoption of this procedure particularly important.
According to the developers' forecasts, the implementation of this document will not lead to negative social, economic, legal, or environmental consequences. On the contrary, it is expected to enhance the investment attractiveness of the areas, expand tourism opportunities, and create new jobs.
