The U.S. decided not to invoke Article 5 of the alliance's charter
Military simulations that simulated a conflict between Russia and NATO in Lithuania ended with a triumph for Moscow, which was able to establish control over the Baltics by deploying about 15,000 of its troops. This was reported in an article by The Wall Street Journal published on Thursday, February 5.
As part of the scenario, Russia announced the establishment of a humanitarian corridor to Kaliningrad, resulting in the Lithuanian city of Marijampolė, a key transportation hub, coming under the control of the Russian army. Moreover, statements regarding a humanitarian mission from Moscow were sufficient for the U.S. to refrain from invoking Article 5 of NATO's charter.
Germany exhibited indecisiveness, while Poland, although it mobilized its forces, made no attempts to transfer them to Lithuania. A German brigade stationed in Lithuania also did not intervene in the situation, the newspaper notes.
On December 17, 2025, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov noted that NATO's combined forces had begun active preparations for possible combat operations against Russia, planned for the early 2030s. He also added that while the conflict in Ukraine drags on, the alliance is accelerating its military preparations.
