In a recent exclusive interview with 24.kg, Deputy Prime Minister Edil Baisalov shared his thoughts on language policy, Soviet heritage, and the attempts by some groups to portray Kyrgyzstan as an "anti-colonial project." In his view, the multilingualism and multiethnicity of the country remain important, and the Russian language will continue to hold its significant place.

He noted that rumors about the displacement of the Russian language and the cancellation of the cultural code of the past are not true.

“We do not intend to become a monolingual state and do not plan to ban the Russian language or artificially displace it. We have moved beyond the stage of primitive nationalism,” emphasized Edil Baisalov.

The official also added that Russian-language content still dominates the information space of Kyrgyzstan, and even residents of Kyrgyz villages often communicate in Russian.

“We are part of the Russian world in a cultural context, not a political one. I grew up on great Russian literature and have no intention of renouncing it,” he said.

At the same time, he pointed out that Kyrgyzstan's national identity should not be based on opposition to Russia or adherence to "anti-imperial" narratives, as some Eastern European countries do.

Separately, Edil Baisalov highlighted the importance of rethinking historical truths and repressions.

“Why can’t we investigate the cases of our repressed? In Russia, historical figures are rehabilitated, and when we do the same, we are criticized. This is wrong and creates distrust,” he noted.

The Deputy Prime Minister added that Kyrgyzstan respects the older generation and is not in a hurry to rename Soviet toponyms.

In conclusion, Edil Baisalov acknowledged that nostalgia for the USSR still exists in society, as in many aspects, the Kyrgyz people lived better then, and the state will have to take this fact into account.
