Kyrgyzstan is actively engaging with European structures against the backdrop of information about potential restrictive measures from the European Union. As Deputy Prime Minister Edil Baisalov stated in an exclusive interview for Nomad TV during the World Government Summit in Dubai, the country continues to maintain dialogue with European partners.
According to Baisalov, Kyrgyz diplomats in Brussels and other cities in Europe maintain regular contacts with partners. Bishkek plans to deepen its work in this direction and conduct additional consultations and negotiations.
He emphasized that reports of possible restrictions are puzzling, as Kyrgyzstan needs to import components for the IT sector, including high-performance computers and aviation fuel.
“We are perplexed by this situation and intend to intensify our negotiations, seeking clarifications and preparing to provide our own explanations,” he noted.
Baisalov added that the Kyrgyz side is ready to both ask questions and share its explanations with European colleagues.
“I am confident that the European authorities have enough patience and understanding not to worsen relations with the Kyrgyz Republic and not to create the impression of intentions to restrict our national development and economic strengthening policy,” he added.
Earlier, it became known from Bloomberg that the European Union is considering the possibility of imposing restrictive measures against Kyrgyzstan in the context of combating circumvention of sanctions imposed against Russia. In particular, the possibility of banning the export to Kyrgyzstan of certain machinery and radio equipment is being discussed.
Since the beginning of 2022, more than 20 Kyrgyz companies have been subjected to sanctions from the USA and the UK. These restrictions have affected financial institutions, the oil and gas sector, as well as the supply of equipment in the IT and telecommunications sectors, aviation fuel, and air transport services.
