A deputy proposed to reconsider the criteria for determining poverty

Deputy Marlen Mamataliyev initiated a discussion on revising the criteria for assessing poverty in Kyrgyzstan. This idea was voiced during a meeting with Edil Baysalov, the Deputy Chairman of the Government.

According to Mamataliyev, many families are deprived of the right to receive benefits due to strict requirements, such as owning a car older than 20 years or a motorcycle. He noted that newer vehicles may be accessible to low-income populations and do not always indicate financial well-being.

The Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet promised to consider the proposed changes during a complete review of the poverty criteria.

It is important to note that in Kyrgyzstan, citizens with an annual income of less than 65,000 soms are classified as poor.

Those with an income below 41,349 soms per year are also considered to be below the poverty line.

The determination of the poverty level is based on data from household surveys and takes into account the minimum needs for food and non-food goods.
