Felix Kulov: Early Presidential Elections in Kyrgyzstan Could Disrupt the SCO Summit
“This is an unnecessary and unwanted strain”
According to former Prime Minister Felix Kulov, early presidential elections in Kyrgyzstan could hinder the holding of the SCO summit planned for this fall.
Kulov expressed his opinion on the possible elections, believing that their feasibility is questionable, considering both the term of Sadyr Japarov's presidency and his level of support among the population.
“If Sadyr Japarov decides to hold early elections, he will be forced to resign. In my opinion, this decision would be a mistake. Our partners in the SCO will not understand such a move, especially if it leads to the disruption of the summit this year,” emphasized Kulov.
He added that elections could be organized in 2027, after the SCO summit and the World Nomad Games, which are also scheduled for this year.
“Even if Japarov announces early elections and temporarily steps down, it will not be difficult for him to reclaim the presidential seat. However, the absence of a leader and uncertainty in the country will create unnecessary stress for both citizens and international partners. This will also negatively affect government members and other civil servants, as a new cabinet will need to be formed after the elections. It is unclear who needs this...” - he concluded.
