Klara Sooronkulova, who held the position of judge of the Constitutional Court, noted in an interview that the constitutional reform carried out in 2021 had a significant impact on the status and powers of the president. In her opinion, this, in turn, affects the logic of conducting elections and the possibility of running for a new term.
“The president was elected in January 2021, and the new version of the Constitution was approved in a nationwide referendum on April 11, 2021. This means that the elections were held under the old rules, and the changes to the Constitution came into effect only two months later,” she clarified.
Sooronkulova is confident that after the adoption of the new version of the Constitution, it would be appropriate to hold new elections, as there have been changes in the powers and status of the president. “We are not obliged to wait until the current term ends to initiate early elections. According to the new Constitution, the president can run for a new term, and nothing prevents this,” the former judge added.
