For the year 2026, the Pentagon has presented its new strategy for U.S. national defense, prioritizing the protection of American territory. This document was published recently.
In this document, China is identified as the main long-term strategic competitor of the United States. However, Washington's approach towards Beijing does not imply a regime change or open confrontation.

Russia is described as a managed threat to NATO's eastern flank, with an emphasis on its nuclear, cyber, and underwater capabilities. Despite this, the U.S. asserts that Russia lacks the resources to establish hegemony in Europe.

The primary responsibility for conventional defense of Europe and support for Ukraine is placed on NATO allies in Europe.

Key strategic points of interest for the U.S. include Greenland, the Panama Canal, and the Arctic.

Additionally, the Pentagon emphasizes that North Korea's nuclear and missile forces pose a growing threat to U.S. territory.

It is important to note that the Pentagon will continue its significant role within NATO, despite changes in the positioning of the U.S. "on the European theater of operations."

It is worth recalling that in December 2025, the U.S. national security strategy was updated, marking the first time this has occurred during Donald Trump's second presidential term.
