In his message on the social network Truth Social, he noted: "After a productive meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, we laid the groundwork for a future agreement that encompasses Greenland and the entire Arctic region. This decision will bring significant benefits to both the United States and all NATO countries."
Additionally, Trump confirmed that he is canceling plans to impose tariffs that were set to take effect on February 1 for countries supporting Denmark.
In an interview with CNBC, he explained that the decision to cancel the tariffs is related to the agreements reached. "The deal is a bit complex, but we will clarify it later. The NATO Secretary General, I, and a few others were negotiating," he added.
According to Trump, cooperation between the U.S. and Europe in Greenland will cover not only the creation of the "Iron Dome" air defense system but also the extraction of minerals on the island. The president is confident that the agreement reached will be in effect "forever."
It is worth noting that a bill titled "On the Annexation of Greenland and Granting it State Status" has already been introduced in the U.S. Congress, which implies the possibility for the president to take "any necessary steps" to acquire the island as U.S. territory.
Donald Trump had previously stated that the U.S. would "somehow" control Greenland. During his first presidential term, he expressed intentions to purchase the island, and in March 2025, he mentioned the possibility of its annexation, threatening Copenhagen with trade tariffs in case of refusal.
Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark. In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen signed a Treaty for the Protection of the Island, under which the U.S. committed to defending Greenland against potential aggression.
