At the meeting of the permanent commission of the Bishkek City Council on economics, budget, finance, and investments on February 9, the head of the Education Department of the Bishkek Mayor's Office, Rakhат Musaева, voiced the difficulties associated with the shortage of qualified teachers in the capital's schools.

She noted that in new educational institutions where instruction is conducted in Russian, there is often a low level of education. Musaева emphasized that of the more than 400 open teaching positions in Bishkek, the majority are intended for schools with Russian language instruction.

According to her, the problem lies in the fact that such schools form only one or two classes. After completing elementary school, children face a shortage of subject teachers when they transition to the fifth grade.

In response to these challenges, the Education Department has sent an initiative to the Ministry of Education suggesting that classes not be divided by language of instruction, but that some subjects be taught in both languages. According to the proposal, part of the courses will be taught in Kyrgyz, while the other part will be taught in Russian. In the future, there are also plans to introduce instruction in English, if feasible.

“This will enhance the effectiveness of the educational process,” noted R. Musaева.
