On February 17, a meeting dedicated to improving air quality took place in Bishkek. This was reported by the city administration.
During the hearings, the focus was on several key issues: dustiness and smog. Participants raised numerous questions and suggestions, which were recorded for further consideration.
The event was attended by Bishkek Mayor Aibek Junushaliev, Speaker of the Bishkek City Council Bekzhan Usenaliev, deputies of the Jogorku Kenesh, members of the Ecological Council, experts, representatives of government agencies, construction and financial companies, as well as active citizens and media representatives — a total of more than 150 people.
Mayor Junushaliev reported that the recommendations developed at the previous meeting of the Ecological Council had been successfully implemented. In 2025, the greening plan was increased to 18,000 seedlings, which were planted in schools and city areas. In 2026, it is planned to plant 50,000 seedlings, contracts have already been signed, and preparation of planting material is underway. The plants are undergoing adaptation in nurseries to increase their chances of survival.
“The Ecological Council serves as a platform for constructive dialogue, where the city administration is ready to accept criticism and suggestions, as well as report on the results of the year,” noted Junushaliev.
The event took place at an eco-technological plant that generates electricity from solid household waste, located at one of Bishkek's landfills.
The city head conducted a tour of the plant for the discussion participants, emphasizing its significance for improving the ecological situation in Bishkek.
In conclusion, the mayor thanked the participants for their active involvement and assured that all ideas voiced at the meeting would be taken into account by the relevant structures of the city administration.
The organizers were the Bishkek city administration in collaboration with the Development Policy Institute.
