PM2.5 refers to fine particulate matter with a diameter of less than 2.5 microns, which is 30 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. These particles include dust, ash, soot, as well as sulfates and nitrates present in the air. They are what make the air hazy, a characteristic of large megacities.
On a global level, as of February 15, Bishkek ranks 72nd (as of 11:00) in the air quality and atmospheric pollution rating.
