According to reports from the Cuban Ministry of the Interior, when the coast guard attempted to approach the vessel, shots were fired from the boat. As a result of return fire from the Cuban vessel, four people aboard the American boat were killed.
Additionally, six people were injured by the Cuban coast guard personnel. There were five people on board the Cuban vessel. The Ministry of the Interior clarifies that during the attempt to identify the passengers of the boat registered in Florida, "shots were fired from the boat," resulting in injuries to the captain of the Cuban vessel.
The statement also notes that "the investigation is ongoing to fully determine the circumstances of the incident."
