In St. Petersburg, a scheme related to the sale of organs from deceased individuals who ended up in the hospital morgue has been uncovered.

The Economic Security Department of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region discovered this activity, which involved the illegal export of biological materials.

It has become known that the management of Alexandrovskaya Hospital had long facilitated this process, receiving funds for the transfer of body parts of the deceased to commercial organizations. These biological materials were used for experiments in the fields of cosmetology, surgery, and dentistry. The bodies of individuals without close relatives who led asocial lifestyles were most often involved in this scheme. For each operation, medical professionals received compensation of up to 500,000 rubles.

Additionally, representatives of private companies were allowed to conduct autopsies in the morgue without proper documentation. Documented cases of body substitution of the deceased were noted to avoid suspicion from potential relatives if they suddenly made contact. In connection with these facts, criminal cases have been initiated under Articles 286, 290, and 291 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

As a result, the founder of a company engaged in the production of anatomical biomodels, as well as the head of the hospital's pathology department, have been detained.
