The former president of Nagorno-Karabakh was sentenced to life in prison.
Araik Arutyunyan, who served as the president of Nagorno-Karabakh from May 2020 until September 1, 2023, received a life sentence, which corresponded to the prosecution's demands. Life sentences were also handed down to the former commander of the defense army of the unrecognized republic, Levon Mnatsakanyan, his deputy David Manukyan, and the former head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nagorno-Karabakh, David Babayan.
Additionally, the two previous presidents of the republic, Arkadi Ghukasyan and Bako Saakyan, were sentenced to 20 years in prison.
A total of 15 individuals are involved in this case. Azerbaijani authorities have brought charges against them for committing a number of crimes, including preparation and waging of aggressive war, genocide, violations of the laws and customs of war, terrorism, financing terrorism, as well as violent seizure and retention of power.
