According to U.S. military information, the tanker was surrounded by armed boats belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). These vessels approached the tanker and threatened to seize it.
The U.S. Central Command reported that the destroyer McFaul quickly arrived at the scene and, with support from U.S. aviation, escorted the tanker to a safe area. The vessel continued on its way without further incidents.
The Strait of Hormuz is a key maritime route, especially regarding the transportation of oil and gas. It represents the only exit from the Persian Gulf to the Indian Ocean. In 2024, approximately 20 million barrels of oil and petroleum products passed through the strait daily, accounting for about 20 percent of total global consumption and more than a quarter of maritime oil trade.
