53-year-old Saif al-Islam Gaddafi became a victim of an attack by unknown assailants who shot him in his own home. Before the overthrow of the Gaddafi regime in 2011, he was one of the most influential figures in Libya and attempted to participate in the presidential elections in 2021.

According to his entourage, Saif al-Islam was killed during a "direct confrontation" with four armed attackers who broke into his home in Ez-Zintan, located 160 kilometers southwest of Tripoli.

A consultant for Gaddafi Jr. told local television that the attackers disabled the surveillance systems before killing him. This information was confirmed by the family's lawyer, Marcel Chekkaldi.

According to Libyan media reports, the incident occurred in the garden next to his house, where Gaddafi sustained fatal injuries.

During his father's rule, Saif al-Islam was considered one of the most influential people in Libya, although he did not formally hold any high positions, notes the BBC. He actively influenced the country's foreign policy and played a role as a mediator in important diplomatic matters.
