Kim Gon Hi was found guilty of receiving luxurious gifts from members of the religious organization "Unification Church".
It is worth noting that her arrest took place in August 2025. One of the charges was the acceptance of a Dior bag worth $2,200 as a gift. The presidential administration confirmed the receipt of the bag but clarified that it "is used and stored as state property." Kim Gon Hi was also accused of colluding with the former head of Deutsch Motors, which is a BMW dealer in South Korea, to manipulate the company's stock prices and gain illegal benefits.
Former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was also arrested, declared martial law in the country on December 3, 2024, claiming it was necessary to protect against "threats from North Korean communist forces." However, a few hours later, this decision was revoked, and the ex-president was charged with incitement to rebellion, abuse of power, and aiding the enemy. Legal proceedings against him are ongoing, and one of the charges has requested the death penalty.
