Tetsuya Yamagami, the 45-year-old defendant, confessed to committing the crime using a homemade weapon. The prosecution insisted on a life sentence, while the defense requested only a twenty-year term.
On July 9, 2022, Shinzo Abe was giving a speech in support of his party on the eve of the upper house elections. According to eyewitnesses, shortly after he began his speech, two shots were heard, and he fell, clutching his chest.
