The State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan (GKNB) reported the detention of several officials from the Bishkek city administration, including a former vice mayor, in connection with an investigation into corruption schemes related to the project for a new landfill in the capital.

According to information provided by the GKNB, a criminal case has been initiated due to the misuse of budget funds within the framework of the program for modernizing the solid waste management system and the construction of a new landfill for the city.

The investigation established that in 2015, the Bishkek city administration received a loan of 22 million euros. These funds were intended for strengthening the material and technical base, as well as for acquiring special equipment, including bulldozers, loaders, garbage trucks, and containers, along with the design and construction of a landfill for the municipal enterprises "Tazalyk" and "Bishkek Sanitary Landfill".

An audit showed that the preliminary damage caused to the budget due to the misuse of these funds could amount to about 182 million soms.

During the investigation, which began on January 12, 2025, under Article 336 of the Criminal Code of Kyrgyzstan ("Corruption"), large-scale investigative and operational activities were conducted. As a result, the former vice mayor of Bishkek, the former director of the municipal enterprise "Bishkek Sanitary Landfill," and the heads of contracting organizations were detained. All detainees have been placed in the temporary detention facility of the GKNB in accordance with Article 96 of the Criminal Procedure Code of the KR.

The GKNB clarified that the investigation is ongoing, and all individuals involved in this case are being identified, as well as the final amount of damage incurred by the state budget.
