- The EDB study conducted in March 2026 emphasizes the need for integration projects to form a sustainable energy system in Central Asia.

The development of such projects could become an important factor in transitioning from fragmented national energy systems to a more balanced regional model.

EDB analysts argue that the unification of energy systems enhances the resilience of countries with hydropower potential, such as Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. This allows them to export energy during periods of surplus and import during seasons of shortage. At the same time, for Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, this creates incentives for diversifying generation and more efficient use of gas and renewable resources.

Experts believe that energy policy should be based on a comprehensive approach that combines three key objectives into one strategy.

For example, when evaluating a new energy technology, it is essential to ask whether it enhances system reliability or, conversely, creates new risks, how easily it can be implemented on a large scale, how its costs will change, and what its environmental sustainability is throughout its entire lifecycle.
