A New World Record for the Number of Women Deputies Established in the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan
At a recent meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh, the Speaker of Parliament Marlen Mamataliyev announced that the number of women deputies has reached 31, marking a new global milestone.
He also noted that according to the United Nations, the Kyrgyz Republic ranks first in the world in terms of the percentage of women in parliament, according to information from the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
Mamataliyev emphasized the importance of adhering to quotas for women both in committees and in international parliamentary groups.
“Yesterday we set a new record, and now there are 31 women deputies in parliament. In the presidium, we maintain a 30% quota for women. The rotation of committee leaders has been completed, and for the first time in history, the number of women in the positions of committee chairs fully meets this quota. Women deputies are also among the deputy chairs. For the first time, women have taken leadership positions in international friendship groups. There is a saying in Kyrgyz culture: ‘A girl’s forty braids are great,’ which emphasizes the importance of women’s wisdom. May our women always be honored,” said the speaker.
According to a new report from the Inter-Parliamentary Union of the UN, Kyrgyzstan has become a world leader in the number of women deputies.
The report notes that over the past year, Kyrgyzstan has shown the largest increase in the number of women in parliament — their share has increased by 12.9%. Currently, out of 90 deputies in the Jogorku Kenesh, 31 are women, which complies with legislative requirements stating that in multi-mandate districts, one of three mandates must belong to a female candidate.
