Kim Jong Un reappointed as leader of the ruling party of North Korea

Despite prolonged international sanctions, the country is actively developing its nuclear arsenal, conducting tests of banned intercontinental missiles. However, the regime's secrecy complicates the ability to accurately assess North Korea's military power.

Kim Jong Un, who took power after his father's death in 2011, has invested significant resources in the nuclear program, making Pyongyang a more serious threat to the West, especially to the United States. It is expected that during the congress, which is already in its fourth day, he will announce new phases of the country's military program. Before its start, North Korea showcased new missile systems capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

The congress, which takes place every five years, began on February 19. According to KCNA, about 5,000 party members are participating, creating an opportunity to observe the political structure in North Korea, which remains opaque even to experienced analysts.

These party gatherings are considered key political events that help understand the country's priorities, including foreign policy and nuclear ambitions.

Although Kim Jong Un continues to hold the top position in North Korean leadership, the composition of the presidium, or executive committee, has changed since the last meeting in 2021. According to state media, more than half of its 39 members have been replaced.

In his opening speech last week, Kim Jong Un expressed his intention to improve the country's economy and the living standards of its citizens, calling these tasks "complex and urgent historical challenges."

Particular attention is being paid to the possibility of Kim's daughter, Ju Ae, appearing at the congress. Earlier this month, South Korean intelligence reported that Kim Jong Un had chosen her as his successor. Kim Ju Ae, who is believed to be 13 years old, is becoming an increasingly prominent figure at official events — she has inspected missile systems and attended a military parade in Beijing with her father.
