Sam Altman predicted superintelligent AI 'in a couple of years'

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, made a statement that humanity may be just a few years away from the beginning of the superintelligence era. In his speech at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, held in New Delhi, he noted that by the end of 2028, a significant portion of the world's intellectual resources could be concentrated in data centers.

During his speech, Altman emphasized that such predictions require serious analysis, despite the possibility of their inaccuracy. He stressed that the world is entering an era of rapid technological changes that will affect not only business and science but also global political relations.
The head of OpenAI also expressed concern about the concentration of artificial intelligence in the hands of a single nation or company. He warned that such centralization could lead to systemic risks and even global crises, while broader access to technologies would increase the likelihood of their safe application. Altman also pointed out the danger that societies might agree to authoritarian measures for the sake of technological achievements, claiming that trading freedoms for quick results, for example in medicine, could become a dangerous compromise.
As a measure to address these issues, Altman proposed the creation of an international body similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency, which could respond promptly to emerging threats and develop unified rules for AI development at a global level.
At the same time, he acknowledged that the development of AI could lead to job losses, but expressed confidence in humanity's ability to adapt to changes.
"Technologies always impact the traditional labor market, but we invariably find new and better ways for self-realization," he noted. The head of OpenAI added that over time, advanced AI systems could even surpass organizational leaders and scientists.
During his visit to India, Altman also reported that over 100 million residents of the country use ChatGPT weekly, with more than a third being students. He emphasized that India has become the second-largest market for OpenAI after the USA and one of the fastest-growing regions.
Additionally, OpenAI announced a partnership with Tata Consultancy Services to create data center infrastructure for AI in India. This project will start with a capacity of 100 MW with the potential to increase to 1 GW and will be part of the global Stargate initiative.
