A South Korean official suggested 'importing young women' from 'Vietnam or Sri Lanka' to boost birth rates

The suggestion from Kim arose against the backdrop of a serious demographic situation in South Korea, where the birth rate is one of the lowest in the world. This could lead to a reduction in the country's population from 50 million to 25 million over the next 60 years.

However, his remarks, which were aired in the news, prompted a diplomatic protest from Vietnam, as well as public discontent, ultimately leading to his expulsion from the party. Kim attempted to ease tensions by apologizing the next day, but this did not help mitigate the negative reaction.

The meeting where these comments were made was organized to discuss the possibility of merging the Jindo district with a neighboring city in light of the declining population. Kim explained that his words were aimed at drawing attention to the issues faced by rural communities but acknowledged that the terms he used were "inappropriate," according to local media.

The authorities of South Jeolla Province also apologized for Kim's "inappropriate remarks," which, they said, "caused deep pain to the Vietnamese people and women." The Vietnamese Embassy in Seoul sharply condemned Kim's words, stating that they reflect not only a personal opinion but also an attitude towards migrant women and minorities.

Sri Lanka has not yet commented on the incident.

According to information received on Monday, the Supreme Council of the Democratic Party unanimously voted to expel Kim from its ranks. At the same time, activists advocating for the rights of women and migrants plan to hold a rally outside the Jindo district administration building in response to Kim's comments.
