On February 2, 2026, Deputy Bakyt Tentishev, at a meeting of the committee dealing with agricultural policy, water resources, subsoil use, ecology, and environmental protection, drew attention to the possibility of switching Bishkek to gas heating for the CHPP.
He expressed concern among citizens who fear that such a measure will lead to an increase in heating tariffs for residential premises.
In response, Mayor Aybek Junushaliev confirmed that the transition to gas could indeed raise the population's heating costs.
“Switching the Bishkek CHPP to gas is a very costly process for the city residents. Gas tariffs will be significantly higher,” he noted.
Moreover, the mayor added that the current equipment at the CHPP is outdated and loses approximately 50% of heat before it reaches the end consumer.
He also reported on ongoing work on decentralization, which in the future may allow for a review of heating tariffs towards a reduction.
At this time, the draft resolution of the Jogorku Kenesh “On the ecological situation related to smog” was being discussed.
