Deputy Bakyt Tentishev raised the question on February 2, 2026, at a committee meeting focused on agricultural policy and ecology, about whether the Bishkek CHPP is indeed a source of air pollution.

The response from Mayor Aibek Junushaliev confirmed this fact; however, he clarified that the CHPP is not the only culprit—transportation and residential areas that use coal for heating contribute the largest share of pollution.

The mayor also reminded that in 2024, the Bishkek CHPP was transferred to the management of the city hall, and since then, efforts have been underway to modernize its equipment.

Additionally, Junushaliev reported that the CHPP has now started selling ash, which became possible due to newly installed equipment that allows for the collection of ash directly from the chimney. Previously, the city hall spent funds on its disposal. "We sell ash at a price of 2900 soms per ton," he added.

The meeting also discussed a draft resolution of the Jogorku Kenesh concerning the environmental situation related to smog.
