In Kazakhstan, there are plans to ban children from creating accounts on social media.
The Ministry of Culture and Information of Kazakhstan has initiated the development of draft laws aimed at restricting access for children and adolescents to social networks, as reported by the press service of the government of the republic on Wednesday.
The document mentions plans to prohibit registration in social networks for users under the age of 16. This decision is related to the need to regulate the activities of online platforms and media, as emphasized in a publication on the official Telegram channel of the government.
The draft laws have already passed the expert evaluation stage and are currently open for public discussion. In collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development of Kazakhstan, mechanisms for verifying the age of social media users and establishing measures of responsibility for violations are expected to be developed, the government reported.
Aida Balayeva, the Minister of Culture and Information of Kazakhstan, noted that the focus will be on increasing media literacy among citizens and supporting independent media. She added that work is already underway in this direction through the Journalism Development Commission and other initiatives.
Additionally, the minister announced plans to consider, at the legislative level, issues related to the regulation of the distribution of advertising revenues between online platforms and media, as well as the possible partial lifting of the ban on advertising certain goods.
