In Kazakhstan, a law is proposed to protect the rights of atheists
Berikbaev pointed out that there has been a recent increase in aggression towards atheists and non-religious people on social media, manifested in insults and accusations of immorality. This is a troubling signal for society, he stated.
He also cited a case where a lecturer from the Islamic University "Nur-Mubarak" humiliatingly compared atheists to animals during a public speech, claiming that they are incapable of distinguishing between good and evil. This is a vivid example of the lack of respect for human dignity, noted Berikbaev.
According to the expert, when such statements come from people with scientific and religious authority, the consequences can be particularly destructive.
Berikbaev emphasized that it is necessary to protect the honor and dignity of all citizens, regardless of their religious beliefs. He believes that atheism is not a threat to traditions, but rather represents one form of worldview. Therefore, a law or amendments to existing norms are required to ensure the protection of non-religious Kazakhs from attacks and insults.
— If we want to adhere to the principles of a secular state, we should guarantee equal rights and protection for all citizens, regardless of their attitude towards religion. A law protecting the feelings of atheists will not be directed against religions or believers; it will be a step towards real equality and respect for human dignity, as well as towards reducing conflict between different worldviews, — concluded Elnar Berikbaev.
