Ulanbek Beishenbaev, Deputy Director of the Department of Transport and Development of Road Transport Infrastructure, reported that this year it is planned to carry out major repairs and rehabilitation of more than 100 kilometers of roads, as well as to construct new ones. The closure of major streets and highways is planned during the holidays when traffic is minimal, he stated.
Reconstruction has already begun on Deng Xiaoping Avenue, where there are currently no serious traffic jams. However, soon streets will be closed one after another, and according to forecasts from the city hall and the Ministry of Transport, we should not expect peace and quiet.
New Roads, Entry Issues, and the Fate of Profsoyuznaya Street
This year, the Bishkek city hall has planned the construction and repair of 119 kilometers of roads. Among them are 12 new roads with a total length of 18.8 km and 115 streets that will be repaired over 100.2 km. Major projects include the construction of the Eastern Bypass Road and the first transport interchange at the intersection of Young Guard Avenue and Leo Tolstoy Street. The work will not be limited to municipal initiatives. The Ministry of Transport and Communications also plans to continue the reconstruction of previously started routes and implement new projects.
According to the maps of upcoming works, the situation looks alarming: almost all roads leading to the capital will be subject to traffic restrictions.
The Ministry is responsible for the construction of a bypass road on Profsoyuznaya Street from Kustanayskaya Street to the traffic police post (8.5 km). This project has already sparked much debate. The idea to resume construction of this section emerged four years ago when possible routes were discussed, including a route through the cemetery, which caused public discontent. This year, the issue was raised again, and Bishkek Mayor Aibek Junushaliev held a meeting with residents, resulting in a decision to route the road around the cemetery, taking into account sanitary standards and the interests of local residents.
“The project includes four traffic lanes, each 3.5 m wide, with a total roadway width of 17.5 m and a central median strip 5 m wide. Sidewalks 2.25 m wide and an outdoor lighting system are also planned. For a quality drainage system, it is planned to install 9,143 drainage ditches,” the Ministry of Transport reported.
Additionally, the reconstruction of the road from Manas Airport to the Bishkek SEZ and the Ala-Archa reservoir (11 km) is planned, as well as repairs on a section of the EM-14 road from Bishkek to Manas International Airport, measuring 2.7 km.
Work will also continue on routes where reconstruction began last year: Arashan - Chunkurchak, Lebedinovka - HPP-5, Bishkek - Kant, and Bishkek - Kuntuu - Shopokov.
Summit, Games, and Issyk-Kul
However, large-scale roadworks will affect not only Bishkek. This year, Kyrgyzstan will host the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit and the World Nomad Games. Preparations for these events are underway in both Bishkek and the Issyk-Kul region. In early February, construction of a bypass road began in Cholpon-Ata, funded from the budget and carried out by China Road and Bridge Corporation. In addition, road asphalting is planned in the Grigorievskoye (Grigorievka - Kol - Kashka-Suu) and Semenovskoye (Semenovka - Ak-Suu) gorges leading to the Kurchin area. The total length of these roads is 34 km. Last year, 6 km of asphalt was laid on the Semenovka - Ak-Suu section, and preparation and laying of the first layer of asphalt began on Grigorievka - Kol - Kashka-Suu. In 2025, blasting works, widening of the roadway, installation of culverts, and bridge repairs were also carried out. The project includes the installation of 69 culverts and the repair of five bridges, two of which have already been completed.
“From March 15, 2026, weather permitting, it is planned to continue work on the remaining 28 km, including foundation preparation and asphalting. The project is expected to be completed by July 1, 2026,” the Ministry of Transport added.
In the Ak-Suu district of the Issyk-Kul region, construction of the road to the Ala-Tuu Resort continues. In 2025, earthworks, road widening, and leveling of the road surface were completed on an 8.5 km section from the village of Jyrgalan to the resort. This year, continuation of earthworks, installation of culverts, and preparation of the road surface foundation are planned.
Foundation preparation and laying of asphalt concrete pavement should be completed by autumn 2026.
Other Roads Planned for Repair
In 2026, major repairs of the Osh - Sary-Tash - Irkeshtam road (61 km) are planned.“According to the design solutions, the road will be four-lane, with metal median barriers to enhance traffic safety. The pavement structure is designed for an axle load of up to 11.5 tons, and outdoor lighting will also be provided at the Irkeshtam checkpoint and near the settlement,” the Ministry of Transport added.
This year, repairs of 45 km of the Bishkek - Osh road are also planned, and the project parameters, particularly the length of the section for medium repairs, are currently being clarified.
