Uzbekistan plans to increase electricity production by 40% this year

Uzbekistan is striving for radical changes in its energy sector. At a recent meeting led by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, it was announced that by 2026, the republic plans to achieve electricity production of 90 billion kilowatt-hours. This is 40% more than in 2020, driven by the dynamic development of the country's economy.

Currently, the capacity of generating facilities in Uzbekistan is 25.8 thousand megawatts, with almost a third of this volume provided by renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydro energy. The investment portfolio of the sector includes 133 projects worth $51.4 billion. Tashkent plans to commission an additional 6.7 thousand megawatts of new capacity by the end of the current year, while actively developing energy storage systems and modern electrical grids.

Improving electricity supply in the Fergana Valley is becoming a priority for the authorities of Uzbekistan, which includes integrating energy systems with neighboring countries. There is also an emphasis on strict resource conservation and the implementation of energy-efficient technologies at large industrial enterprises, which will save about 4.4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity by 2026.

Comparison with Kyrgyzstan

The indicators of Kyrgyzstan's energy sector are significantly lower than those of its neighbor. According to data from the National Statistical Committee and the Ministry of Energy of the Kyrgyz Republic, in 2024, Kyrgyzstan produced 14.7 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, of which about 88% comes from hydropower plants.

In 2025, electricity production in the republic increased to 15.38 billion kilowatt-hours, representing a 4.5% growth. However, Kyrgyzstan continues to be a region with a deficit of electricity: domestic consumption, exceeding 18 billion kilowatt-hours, significantly surpasses its own production, forcing the republic to import electricity, including from Uzbekistan.
