At the recent meeting of the Basin Council in Naryn, the main focus was on the strategy for managing the region's water resources. Participants emphasized the basin approach outlined in the Water Code of the Kyrgyz Republic. This model implies that a river is viewed as a holistic organism, regardless of administrative divisions.
This approach promotes more harmonious use, protection, and preservation of water resources, following natural drainage paths. This, in turn, allows for finding mutually acceptable solutions for all regions, excluding possible conflicts between water users in different parts of the Naryn basin. Meeting participants also thoroughly analyzed the current state of water resources and the development of infrastructure in this area.
Discussing the impact of climate change, council members noted that global warming is already affecting the economy and people's lives, necessitating a reassessment of approaches to irrigation and water consumption. The Basin Council, which unites government structures, local self-government, and public organizations, reaffirmed its role as an important platform for coordinating actions in this field.
The council, operating on a voluntary basis, meets at least once a year to make strategically important decisions. The results of the meeting in Naryn once again highlight that effective management of water resources is not only a technical task but also a crucial condition for the sustainable development of society as a whole.
