Mobile infrastructure - the key to the digital economy of Central Asia

Mobile infrastructure is a fundamental element for the growth of the digital economy in Central Asia, as noted today in Bishkek by the CEO of Ericsson, Aydin Abzhanbekov, at the B5+1 forum.
The importance of mobile phones as the primary tool for most digital services, including mobile banking applications like Kaspi, as well as AI-based platforms and high-quality video, is undeniable.

“The line between telecommunications and information technology is becoming increasingly blurred, as both fields are now closely intertwined. Most business models depend on the use of smartphones. A person may leave documents or keys at home, but the phone will always be with them,” emphasized Abzhanbekov.

Moreover, he pointed out the challenging working conditions for operators in the region, where the average revenue per user (ARPU) is among the lowest in the world, while companies are forced to continually invest in network upgrades, coverage expansion, and compliance with regulatory standards. In particular, in Kazakhstan, government initiatives “500+” and “250+” are being implemented to improve mobile communication in sparsely populated areas.

Abzhanbekov also highlighted the significance of diversifying critical infrastructure suppliers. In some Central Asian countries, almost all networks are built on Chinese equipment, while in Kazakhstan, about half of the 5G networks operate on solutions from Ericsson. “Importing reliable and secure critical infrastructure suppliers creates opportunities for attracting profitable investments,” he added.

According to the head of Ericsson, the development of mobile infrastructure plays a key role for the entire digital economy of the region, including financial technologies, artificial intelligence, and other high-tech developments.
