The European Union has decided to completely halt imports of liquefied natural gas from Russia by the end of 2026, and pipeline gas by September 30, 2027. This regulation obliges all member states of the bloc to abandon Russian supplies, as stated on the EU Council's website.

Slovakia and Hungary have protested against this ban. Nevertheless, the majority of votes were sufficient for its adoption. Hungary plans to challenge this decision in the European Court.

Before the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine, the share of Russian gas in the European Union exceeded 40 percent; however, by 2025, this figure had dropped to 13 percent.
