The Ministry of Agriculture intends to bring 35,000 hectares of low-productive pastures into agricultural circulation.
Work on the development will begin in the first quarter of 2026 and will last until the fourth quarter of 2030.
Of the total area, the creation of fruit plantations is planned for 10 thousand hectares.
The improvement of the condition of low-productive pastures will be achieved through the introduction of fruit plantations and the development of agricultural production.
According to estimates by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the total area of pastures in the country is 9.15 million hectares. The fund noted that the mountainous terrain requires herders to seasonally move their animals: in winter, livestock are placed on low-mountain pastures, which become inaccessible during heavy snowfall, and in summer, they are on high-altitude areas with nutritious grass, which helps improve the health and productivity of the animals. IFAD also reports that more than 4.5 million hectares, which is half of all pasture lands, are in a state of degradation. One of the main reasons for the deterioration of pastures is overgrazing, as well as climate change, which includes a temperature increase of 2–3°C, a rise in precipitation by 12–18%, and the occurrence of 7–10 mudflows per year, as stated in one of the fund's reports.
