Kyrgyzstan will receive a loan of 61.7 million euros from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to upgrade its electricity network, as reported by the bank's press service.

As part of this financial package, an investment grant of up to 3 million euros and additional funds for technical assistance amounting to 3 million euros are also included. These resources are aimed at reconstructing the electricity transmission system in the country.

The main goal of the project is to construct a new power transmission line with a length of 53 kilometers and a capacity of 500 kilovolts, connecting the cities of Kemin and Balakchy. In addition, a new substation with similar capacity will be built in Balakchy, EBRD specialists note.

Bank representatives emphasize that upgrading the energy sector is extremely important, as about 90% of substations in the country have been in operation for over 25 years. Technical and commercial losses in the networks reach nearly 14.6%, which is significantly higher than international standards.
As a result of the modernization, it will be possible to reduce annual electricity losses by 34 gigawatt-hours and decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 3,323 tons of carbon dioxide per year.
The implementation of this project will ensure stable electricity supply and allow Kyrgyzstan to export surplus "green" hydropower to neighboring countries.

The EBRD has been actively working in the Kyrgyz Republic since 1992, investing nearly 1.15 billion euros in 280 different projects.
