Economist on Bishkek: Vegetables Used to Grow Here, Now Homes Do
How to solve the problem of overpopulation in the capital?
Economist Asylbek Ayupov, in an interview with Vesti.kg, urged the authorities to reconsider their approaches to internal migration in the country.
The professor, who holds a doctorate in economics, expressed concerns that the ongoing mass relocation of citizens of Kyrgyzstan to Bishkek and the Chui region could lead to serious consequences.
Ayupov emphasizes the need for regional development: "They have significant potential. It is important to work on the industrial, urban, and agricultural development of small settlements. Migration of citizens to the capital should be limited, as this is related not only to issues of ecology and health but also to the economic prospects of the entire country. Industry can contribute to the development of all regions, not just the capital," he noted.
The economist also added that due to the increasing number of residents, the authorities are forced to build on agricultural lands in Bishkek.
"Previously, vegetables were grown on these lands, and now houses are being built there. What will the further development look like? How long can the communications function? People want to improve their homes, and for that, they need to create appropriate conditions," Ayupov emphasized.
