Bishkek's Grocery Basket as of January 10. What Has Increased in Price the Most

Bishkek's grocery basket as of January 10. What has increased in price the most
Since the beginning of 2026, specifically in the first two weeks, there has been a rise in prices for a number of products in Bishkek, including cucumbers, tomatoes, cabbage, apples, and bananas. At the same time, potatoes, peppers, onions, carrots, and pears have become cheaper.

As a result, the minimum grocery set has increased in price by 540 soms, and its current cost is 6,723 soms.

Our team visits one supermarket weekly, recording prices for the same range of products. We will provide complete information about the composition of our grocery basket and the reasons for price changes in the future.
It should be noted that prices in supermarkets may differ from market prices. Stores often have promotional offers with reduced prices.
According to our analysis, since the start of the experiment in late October 2018, the cost of the grocery basket has increased by 3,453 soms. Compared to the same period last year, the increase was 656 soms.
Bread remains the most affordable product in our basket. Fresh vegetables and fruits have the most significant impact on the overall cost, as they most substantially influence price changes.

Throughout 2025, the cost of the grocery basket increased by 686 soms. The lowest price was recorded on October 18 — 5,791 soms, and the highest — 6,927 soms on December 6.

The nutritional standards for citizens of Kyrgyzstan were established by the government in 2009. According to these standards, each citizen must consume at least 9 types of products monthly.

The established norm includes: 9 kg of bread, 5 kg of meat, 8.2 kg of potatoes, 9 kg of vegetables, 10 kg of fruits and berries, 2 kg of sugar, 17 liters of milk, 1 liter of vegetable oil, 4 eggs, 100 grams of fish and fish products, and 200 grams of tea.

Based on the minimum norms, we calculated the cost of the consumer basket for a family of four, based on prices in one of the supermarkets in Bishkek. Recently, many residents prefer to shop in large stores.

Of course, our calculations are approximate and based on government standards. Additionally, each person has their own food preferences, and not everyone eats the same amount. Some, for example, do not consume meat, while others do not like sugar. Therefore, it is not advisable to perceive our basket as the only correct one; it is more of an experiment by 24.kg.

Grain products include not only bread but also pasta and cereals. Our family typically consumes apples and bananas as fruits, and onions, carrots, peppers, cabbage, cucumbers, and tomatoes as vegetables. The selection is limited to the essentials.
